Now the question of earnings is severe for you because the money you were given at the beginning won’t last for a long time. There are two simplest methods: 1 - Chopping trees. a. Your lumberjacking skill should exceed 55. There are 6 types of logs: 1. log, 2. elven log, 3. red wood log, 4. eldar log, 5. black log, 6. light wood log. Then you come close to a tree and start chopping, just double-click on a hatchet and aim at the tree and you’ll get some logs in your pack. The more you’ll chop the more you can sell. That’s among the rules of the realm that you can be killed and your killer can take everything you had in the pack looting your dead body. So, it could be reasonable to store most important things in the bank. Come at the bank and say “bank” to open your personal bank-box – that’s it where you can store your property. Start with chopping 1k of logs. In the realm of UO (Ultima Online) it is appropriate that 1K = 1000, triple zero changes into “K” letter, as in physics. After chopping some logs it could be worthy to sell it. For that purpose you should find a house right of the bank in Minoc with a yellow post in front of it. Also, there are teleports to mining cave and dungeon to the right and to the left of the post. Double-clicking the post would take you to the Market. At the market, or rather in the “Speech Room” you’ll find posts with your lovely logs on them. You can sell them here. Click at the post once and you’ll get the price offered for one log. Check every Autobuy (i.e. post) for the best price and sell your logs. 2 – Mining, extracting of ore. You need pickaxe for mining. You can purchase it as from other players who could craft pickaxes, or in a town-shop with a tool painted on a sign. Though, tough pickaxes can be purchased from other players or their personal vendors only. а. Rusty Pickaxe, b. Dull Copper Pickaxe, c. Old Copper Pickaxe, d. Bronze Pickaxe, e. Rose Pickaxe. Take a pickaxe into the Newbie Mine in Minoc. There, you should take it in hand and then double-clicking on the pickaxe and aiming at the floor will result with some long-expected ore appearing in your pack. But that’s not enough. In the same cave you can find a smeltery where you can smelt all the ore produced into ingots. Come close to the smeltery and double-click ore in your pack. Take it into account that when your skill in mining is low there is a chance to burn some ore. Don’t be upset – everyone faced this at first. After smelting, come to the Knight in armor and click on it to open your bank-box. You can take your ingots into it and return to mining. When having mined enough, don’t be ashamed of going to market and selling your ingots. The process is the same as described above for logs. Keep in mind, it’s important, you should feed your character or he will die…, there are town-shops selling food. You should also know, that almost every town has so called “guard zone”. i.e. (almost) in every town there are Guards, defending you from hostile players. When some player starts to attack you – a red-colored note "You see <smbd> attacking you" appears over his head. It’s enough to say “Guards” to stay alive – the aggressor will be killed by guardians. If you are going to leave the town be ready for other players or monsters attack you till death. If someone is a murderer and has killed more than 6 players, his name becomes red. Entering the “Guard zone” of the town is of a mortal danger for him – he will be killed by guardians immediately. And another one tip – as you have no house at first but still need working out somewhere, try doing that in lower populated towns and don’t leave your character in Britain or Minoc, because at the morning you take a risk to find your character in a Ghost state, i.e. dead. Stay where most players don’t prefer to appear, in Trinsic or Magincia for example. It’s better to work out far from banks, but using call for Guards. Chopping and mining in towns is good and safe as you know – no one attacks and no one could take away your ore/logs. The best town for gathering resources is Yew. You can find a way to Yew with the automap which can be downloaded here. You can go on foot but riding a horse from Minoc or Britain is better. A lot of trees and stones can be found in Yew. The problem is that you can’t mine or chop in towns forever, despite of your wish. Longer you chop and mine – hire your skill. After your skill in Mining or Lumberjacking will reach 75 you will have to leave the bounds of the city. You can chop or mine at the countryside from the very beginning, but it’s better to start under protection, isn’t it? Unfortunately, it’s impossible to live in complete safety till you make old bones. That’s why you leave “Guard zone” (GZ) and live up to the hilt. New circumstances surround you here and first of all it is Ore and Wood Guardians. Who are they? They protect ore and woods. If you have mined some ore or chopped a tree out of GZ there is a chance of waking a spirit of wood and earth from asleep. He will try to punish you for disturbance. Don’ worry too much, they could be killed/evaded/dispelled. 1. They could be killed. The best weapon for hunting them is bow. Red Wood Bow for example, it is cheap and good enough. Also, you need archery skill, so try to work it out in Newbie Dungeon. And don’t forget arrows – you need something to fire with! Both Ore and Wood Guardians will use magic against you. Lightning, Paralyze (you’ll be unable to move for some time, to get rid of this effect you should cast Magic Arrow spell at yourself), Blade Spirit (blades, just imagine something like whirligig with cutting blades), and some other spells. Using your bow and magic of course you’ll kill the Guardian. As a prize you’ll find some gold in the corpse and a few arrows stuck. And also some ingots for Ore Guard and some logs for Wood, if you’ll cut the Wood one with a butcher knife – there would be some more things. Ore Guardians are considerably weaker then Wood Guardians. And the first are not as rare as the last. And there are more types in which they appear. For example you can find following guards: Copper Ore Guardian, Rusty, Bronze ... and so on. Wood Guardians has much less types: 1.Elven Log Guardian, 2.Red Wood Log, 3.Eldar Wood Log, 4.Black Wood Log. It stands to reason that Elven Wood Guardians are easiest to kill. Killing Wood Guardians becomes easier after some training with Ore Guardians. Hunting monsters is called PvM (Player versus Monster). 2. Guardians could be not met using Hide or Stealth skill (hiding makes you “invisible” for players or monsters and when you succeed in the attempt of hiding the note “you have hidden yourself well” will appear over your head). When you mine or chop in hidden state Guardians are unable to find you, so they will go away to somewhere. But beware of being detected by other players, or revealing yourself with running too fast. You will become visible after some period of time also, so it’s better to hide more often. 3. They could be dispelled. Unfortunately, this method is not very popular. You need Ignition Scrolls for it. Using this scroll on a monster will burn him and cause him to disappear, leaving you without loot from his corpse and with no corpse actually. You’ll get no logs, no ore and no money. Furthermore, these scrolls can’t be found – crafted by players only and thus require some money spending. You pay, but have nothing from that, excluding calmness. It isn’t very good investment. 4. And of course you can run away to avoid fighting. Somewhere its better not to fight then being killed, isn’t. By the way, unlike the real world if you were killed in Ultima you have a chance to revive. You should find Ankh of Sacrifice for that purpose. Such Ankhs stand at the entrance to every dungeon and in some towns. Or you can find in the automap a house of Healer with the appropriate sign, come to the man inside the house in “war” mode and say “ress” and you are alive again. The problem is that everything you had in your backpack is still in your dead body, and if you don’t want to lose your items it’s better to return back and take them. Monsters are unable to loot your body. But hurry up, you have about 10-15 min before your corpse will disappear leaving you with nothing. Forewarned is forearmed.
